Your Child’s First Visit

Your child’s first appointment with our team will be longer than their following appointments, as we want to take the time to build a relationship with families and discuss a full dental history including current brushing schedules and habits, challenges, and diet as well as sleeping habits.

Affordable Pediatric Dental Care

Our office accepts all PPO plans that allow for out-of-network benefits, and we will file your claim for you as well as accept payment on your behalf directly from the insurance company. We will collect your estimated out-of-pocket portion at the time of service. We accept FSAs, HSAs, and all major debit and credit cards.

For specific information regarding your insurance plan, we recommend getting in touch with your provider directly. We can also happily provide a pre-treatment estimate. Depending on your insurance, we may need up to 3 weeks to receive that estimate, so please let us know if you’d like us to begin that process with plenty of advance notice. For additional questions, please contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should kids begin visiting the dentist?

The American Dental Association recommends that kids begin visiting their primary dental care provider around their first birthday or when their first tooth grows in, whichever happens first.

Kids should attend dental appointments for routine care and checkups just as often as adults, or at least twice per year.

Family dentists often market themselves as being family and kid-friendly. Pediatric dentists receive additional training and certification to work with babies, toddlers, and young children as well as preteens and teenagers. Dr. Sherwood is Board Certified by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists (AAPD).

Parents are welcome to stay with their children throughout their entire appointment. When you feel like it’s appropriate, we strongly encourage you to allow your child to go back on their own as it builds their relationship with the provider and fosters their sense of independence and responsibility for their dental care routine and habits. We will always come and get you if the child requests you or begins to feel uncertain. We never want their visit to the dentist to be anything other than positive.

Positive dental experiences begin at home. We advise families to always speak positively about dentistry and tell their children how important taking care of their teeth and gums. Dental-related books, toys, cartoons, and games can also help make dental care seem more familiar and less foreign and scary to a child.

Yes! Introducing kids to our office and our team before their first appointment can help ease their anxiety and help them look forward to their first visit.
